Extremely low mintage Platinum Maple
1 Attachment(s)
I picked up some 1/20 ounce platinum Canadian Maples and for fun thought it would be interesting to look up the mintages. The numbers are usually in the low thousands, but it turns out that one date, 1995, has a mintage of only 460 pcs. That's right, 460 pcs. making it one of the scarcest modern bullion coins.
For the numismatically inclined, does a crazy low mintage like that add much interest or value? Are there any trustworthy dealers I should get advice from? Sorry for the non TomD worthy scans. White metals are tough. |
Re: Extremely low mintage Platinum Maple
I have no platinum Magnum but wow I am jealous they look beautiful scan et all, Picture of the illuminutty Queen included. Might ask GIM member Oroplata where to buy & sell in Toronto, I know he was asking about that back in Dec.

Nice coin, tiny though. Saw a 1/20th ounce Pt M.L at a dealer that had a polar bear on it instead of the Maple leaf still had the queen on the reverse. Have never seen another like that. Imagine low mintage is a big plus , especially from a well known National mint such as the RCM.

Re: Extremely low mintage Platinum Maple
If I found mintage numbers like that on something I owned I would be extremely pleased. That said, just how much it effects the price really depends on demand. How many people are out there collecting these by date? Not many, I'd guess. Although, you might get a good price just on preception... eg. folks who aren't collecting them, per se, but who think the low mintage is going to make it worth a buzzillion dollars some day. eBay would be a good place to make that play.

Re: Extremely low mintage Platinum Maple
Wow! I didn't even know they made them in the 1/20 oz. size. Must be some pretty small coins. In other news, 2009 Platinum Maples are supposed to coming out soon. It's cool to see them back in production again. Also gives me hope that we will see new Palladium Maple Leafs sometime in the future.

Re: Extremely low mintage Platinum Maple
Considering a 1996 SAE runs $60-$100 depending on the idiot I'd say you could find an idiot.

I don't carry that many Peso's Magnum, (although it might become a good idea!). How does this baby compare in size to say . . a dime or a penny?

Re: Extremely low mintage Platinum Maple
It's hard to gauge demand without actually selling the coin. The 1/15 platinum Maple has an established market price of around $450-500, but the lower mintage 1/20 is generally not priced separate from the other regular bullion coins.
The mint also issued platinum wildlife sets, some of which had total mintages in the low hundreds. Despite the incredible low mintages, there appears to be a balance between supply and demand and prices have been moved mostly by bullion value as opposed to collector interest. |

Re: Extremely low mintage Platinum Maple
Well. it does seem that high prices for the low mintages are confirmed on ebay at least. Here is another listing that, while poorly designed, does manage to get 1G for a total of 3/10 oz of platinum. I had to read the listing twice to realize a '95 was involved.
